Mission Statement: Testing the Breitling Avenger Chronograph 45 Night Mission



Wow, it’s hot! That’s the kind of welcome you get when you put on the Breitling Avenger Chronograph 45 Night Mission. This chronograph is one of 14 models launched in the fall of 2019 as part of the refreshed, streamlined Avenger collection, which includes four watches that replace the former Colt series.

We were so enthusiastic about the watch we tested! No doubt it’s because of its sporty, eye-catching design, the military green dial and strap, and the dark-coated case that give this watch its name “Night Mission”. Everything about it exudes strength and solidity: the wide stepped bezel, the solid ring-shaped chronograph pushers, the large screw-down crown with crown guards, the striking hour markers, and the calfskin strap with an industrial embossed pattern.

Size alone is not the determining factor in its powerful impact – despite the watch’s 45mm diameter and 16.5mm strap height, neither of these measurements is that striking, and surprisingly, the wearing comfort is still very good. The watch is very comfortable to wear, with its smooth underside, soft strap, and flat buckle. Of course, the low weight also plays a role, as Breitling used titanium, so it weighs only 120 grams.

Eye-Catching Design
The sturdy case features a DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating, which increases the surface hardness and enhances the industrial/military look of the watch. The carbon coating used by Breitling is more anthracite than pure black, which matches the khaki green components better.

The brushed finish on the case complements the overall military design of the watch. There is only one small drawback: despite the matte surface, fingerprints are still visible, and fingerprints are more difficult to wipe off on the stepped bezel than on a simpler case design.

The dial features military numerals, which have been a signature element of the Avenger series since the beginning. Such stenciled numbers are found on military vehicles and other equipment, and the vertical lines on the 0, 4, and 8 you see here are typical.

Eye-catching luminous effects
The luminous dots on the numerals, hands and unidirectional rotating bezel glow brightly at night, thus ensuring long-term legibility. It is just as easy to read the time during the day as at night – at least roughly, because the minute scale on the edge of the dial is very fine and does not contrast much with the dark khaki green background. The dark grey chronograph hands also lack contrast, so legibility is reduced here as well.

The overall finishing is excellent and the design is practical. This pilot watch (with a different strap, of course) is water-resistant to 300 meters and has a unidirectional bezel and luminous dots, so it can also be used as a diver's watch. The protruding structures on the bezel make it easy to grip, and the sturdy protective ring protects the chronograph pushers from damage caused by side impacts. The caseback is simple – solid titanium with a beige enhanced version of the Breitling name and the watch specifications engraved.

Robust movement Chronograph
The chronograph is easy to start, stop and reset. Perhaps a bit too simple – a clearer pressure point would have been more suitable for the powerful appearance of the new Avenger.

Breitling submits all its watches for chronometer certification, so the new Avenger is equipped with the Breitling Caliber 13, which is based on the Sellita automatic SW500 “Chronomètre” movement and is the highest quality in its three quality categories.

The official Swiss testing body COSC confirms that the movement runs between -4 and +6 seconds in five positions when the chronograph is activated. We also checked the sixth position, the “crown right”, which is the most common position when looking at the watch directly and the position in which the watch is usually left on the winder for several hours. The electronic timing machine showed an acceptable average daily running rate of +4.7 seconds, with a maximum difference of only a small 6 seconds between the various positions. This was confirmed in our actual wrist testing, where the Avenger was almost 5 seconds faster per day.

The only downside to this solid and accurate chronograph movement is that the hands of the watch we tested had noticeable wobble when setting the time. To compensate for the wobble, the minute hand must first be advanced forward and then moved backward to set the exact time, so that it engages correctly when the crown returns to the locked position and the movement starts running.

Overall good impression
All in all, the test confirmed our first impressions. Breitling has created a solid sports watch for everyday wear, with a design that matches its functionality. The design, finish, comfort and ease of use of this new model are particularly pleasing, with the only real drawback being the difficulty in reading the time.

Therefore, both during the day and, as its name suggests, at night, the Avenger Chronograph 45 Night Mission is the ideal companion for both sports and everyday tasks.
